Giving Thanks

Dear Servants,

By now most of you know that I have been nominated for bishop in the Gulf Atlantic Diocese. I will be one of two candidates on the slate for election at a special Diocesan Synod in Tallahassee, Saturday, May 14th. It was my wish to inform my parish family of this news prior to the public announcement. If any of you missed my announcement a few weeks ago or did not hear directly from me, please know that was my intention. My nomination has been received overwhelmingly positively by the parish, for which I am humbled and honored. Thank you all for your support and prayers for Jody and me as we walk through the next two months leading up to the election. For those unfamiliar with the process, once elected, there will be a period of transition from May 14th until August 27th when the new bishop will be consecrated.

Let me begin by saying that this is not a position I have sought out or campaigned for but rather something that Jody and I felt, after much prayer, I should be open to consider. I was nominated by several people in the diocese and following the advice of many trusted mentors, I allowed my name to go forward. Bishop Neil has been a wonderful bishop for our diocese and has lead us through the creation and growth to where we are today. Now as he plans to retire, it is important that his successor take up the baton so that we can build upon the work begun. Should God allow it, I would be honored and excited about the challenges and opportunities to work to build an even stronger diocese. If God chooses not to select me, I will continue to serve as faithfully as I can in this wonderful place. Servants has grown into a strong and healthy parish and Jody and I consider all of you our family. Many of you know that our former church community at All Souls Jacksonville was a similar community of love and support and we give great thanks to our awesome Lord for creating a similar community here at Servants.

You may be wondering, what would my election to bishop mean for Servants? In short, it would mean finding a new rector to carry on where I leave off. Later this week, a letter from Jose Boada on behalf of the Vestry will be sent giving you some basic information of what that would look like. I can tell you that if elected, Jody and I would continue to live in Gainesville. I can also tell you that the leadership team we have built at Servants will ensure ministry continues in the parish and throughout our city and county.

I want to make two announcements with regard to our leadership team which I feel certain will add to your assurance of good things to come. First, I am pleased to announce that Mother Susan Rhodes has agreed to become a part of our ministry staff. Mother Susan is a wonderful preacher and gifted pastor.  Susan+ was formerly rector of New Life Anglican Church, Lake Placid, Florida. This parish was originally a mission of Servants and so in some ways, Susan+ and her husband David, are coming home. They are also active in the healing ministry of the Anglican Church in North America through the Order of St. Luke’s. Susan+ will provide pastoral oversight to our prayer and healing ministry in the parish, as well as joining our preaching/celebrant rotation and assisting with pastoral care.

Second, I want to announce that I have asked Ramona Chance to be the senior warden for 2022. Ramona has been a leader in the parish for as many years as I have been in Gainesville and I consider her a trusted confidant. In the event of my election, Ramona has the leadership and administration skills to keep the vestry, staff, and congregation informed of progress towards the naming of the new rector.

I see both of these women as God’s provision for Servants during this time of discernment and transition, and I know you will rejoice with me in their willingness to serve. Please pray for them, the rest of the staff, and the vestry as together we lead into God’s future for the parish.

I have been overwhelmed with your love and support of my nomination and I appreciate all the prayers being lifted up for the election. In addition to your support of Jody and me, may I ask that you renew your commitment to Servants of Christ through both sacrificial service and generous giving? Should the Lord call me to become bishop, nothing would bless me more than to see Servants of Christ continue to thrive. I know it will through your support and encouragement.

May God continue to prepare our hearts through this Lenten season.

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.”
– Isaiah 11:6

Dear Servants,

Isaiah foreshadows the incarnation of our Lord Jesus with this famous passage. I was struck by this verse as I watched our little ones dramatize the Lord’s birth last Sunday night.  It seems so appropriate for little children to lead us in worship for the Nativity of our Lord because it reminds us of how fragile and vulnerable God was willing to become in order to identify and come close to all of humanity.  It is also a reminder of Jesus’ words that we must come to him as, “little children”. I continue to pray for each of you as we walk as a congregation through the last week of Advent.

Peace,

For I know that my Redeemer lives,
and at the last he will stand upon the earth.
And after my skin has been thus destroyed,
yet in my flesh I shall see God,
whom I shall see for myself,
and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me!
– Job 19:25-27
Dear Servants,

I am so thankful for my daily Bible readings over these first two weeks of Advent.  I have been in the book of I Corinthians which I quoted in last week’s article and the book of Job.  In Corinthians, Paul is reminding the Church of our hope in the Resurrection, but as you can see above, Job also knows of that same hope even in the face of great adversity.  This passage from Job above seemed very appropriate today.

These two books of the Bible have truly sustained me as I’ve walked with each of you towards Ralph Coryell’s impending death.  Since the news of Ralph’s passing Sunday night, I have been reflecting on how much he means to my family personally, as well as to our whole congregation.  I am thankful for the gift he has been to my life and ministry.  We will all have the opportunity to celebrate Ralph’s life and proclaim with Job the hope we have in Our Redeemer, Jesus Christ! Plans are shaping up for the funeral service to be held on Saturday, December 26th.  I will give you more information once a date and time are finalized.

Ralph told me many times that God had revealed to him how precious the Body of Christ is as we gather together for worship.  He may be absent from his earthly body now, but he is present with our Body in Jesus Christ our Lord, always.

“But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
– I Corinthians 15:23-26

Dear Servants,

Welcome to Advent!  This is the season of anticipation.  The first four weeks of the liturgical calendar build up in anticipation of our celebration of the birth of Jesus our Lord into our world.  Emmanuel, God with us!  We acknowledge that God’s plan for saving the world was always to bring Jesus to us.  But even while we celebrate the incarnation, we also anticipate Jesus’ return to us, his second coming! Each week we express this in our liturgy, “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again”.

Paul is reminding the people of Corinth that the life in Jesus they have already experienced is just a foretaste of what’s to come.  He is calling them to live with the expectation that God will destroy every rule, power, and authority that opposes Him, including death!

What are you anticipating this season of Advent? Will this be simply another December rush towards Christmas day, or can you begin to see yourself living from the incredible news of the incarnation towards Jesus’ victorious return?  How can your obedience to Jesus this week cooperate with what God will ultimately accomplish in the whole world?  Can you pray for yourself, ‘Come Lord Jesus’? How can our congregation anticipate all that God will do?  Please continue to pray for the vestry leaders as we seek the Lord for wisdom.  Let us live this Advent with great expectations!

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,  because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now..”
– Philippians 1:3-5
Dear Servants,

We have over 100 adults joining in the celebration banquet this Saturday night as we give thanks for all the Lord has done for Servants of Christ over these first ten years.  The purpose of our banquet and joint service on Sunday

is to give thanks to the Lord.  It is so important that we pause and give thanks.  What better time of the year to look back with Thanksgiving just a few days from now.
It will be a special joy also to welcome home several families that God has brought through Servants over the years, who now live in other cities or even other states.   They remind us all that God is doing much more in this parish than we see at any moment.  We sometimes forget all that God has done, but this weekend is about looking back and remembering.  I know you will be blessed to see familiar faces back in Gainesville.  Special thanks to Beth Kirby for the great old photos on Facebook!
Lastly, it is a time to celebrate the partnership with our dear Bishop James Ochiel.  I am so glad that many of you are getting to spend time with Bishop James in community groups or other occasions.  There will be an opportunity to give to a special offering for the Bishop at our
10 am joint service next Sunday
.
May God fill each of you with the joy Paul talks about in our verses from Philippians as you remember, celebrate, share, and give thanks, this week.
Onward and Upward,
Alex-Signature-TINY
