Acts 2 Groups at Servants of Christ

A Brief Introduction to Acts 2 Groups

Acts 2 Groups are the primary place where you are known and cared for at Servants. It is within these smaller communities that you can build deep relationships and practice applying the gospel to your life. Each group expects to experience Jesus Christ in its midst, enabling participants to be transformed through mutual ministry and experience life in the family of God.

Composed of six to twenty people, groups can meet anywhere: homes, offices, coffee shops, or church buildings. All groups are led by trained lay-leaders from the congregation who receive continued oversight and support from pastoral staff. Groups generally meet two to four times a month for Bible study, fellowship, prayer, and mission. Groups may have monthly or quarterly service projects or outreach events, in place of a regular meeting.

Vision – Acts 2:42-47 (the earliest Christian community)

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the Community, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and extending grace to all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Essential Marks of an Acts 2 Group

An Acts 2 Group is devoted to:

  • The Apostle’s Teaching: The community studies Scripture together.
      • Bible Study will normally be conducted as an inductive Bible study discussion facilitated by the leader(s) and apprentice(s).
  • The Community: The community shares life together.
      • Community will be modeled by the leader(s) and apprentice(s) actively seeking to serve and share with members of the Acts 2 Group.
  • The Breaking of Bread: The community eats together.
      • Sharing a meal is ideally part of every Acts 2 Group. Even eating together once a month can foster greater intimacy.
  • The Prayers: The community prays together.
      • Prayer will be part of every Acts 2 Group gathering and can take a variety of forms, including worshipping God with music.
  • Extending Grace: The community reaches out together.
      • Reaching out is an essential part of any Acts 2 Group. Extending grace to those outside of the Acts 2 Group can take the form of intentionally inviting neighbors and co-workers to serving the poor together to visiting those who are isolated in nursing homes to making meals for the sick.
